Flyers Stun Patriots

Rookie goaltender Kevin Linker made 47 saves, as Goderich doubled Mt. Forest in PJHL play

It has been said that any given team can win on any given night in the Pollock Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

The Goderich Flyers proved the saying to be true at the Maitland Rec Centre Saturday, as they shocked the Mount Forest Patriots in a 4-2 victory.

The Patriots dominated the first period, outshooting the Flyers 24 to 12 but neither team was able to score.

Goderich's Braeden Duncan set up Trent Michie for the game's first goal at 2:17 of the second period, but the lead lasted just one minute and six seconds before Mount Forest tied it up.

The Flyers finished the middle frame leading 4-1 as Matt Bean, Cody Treble and Duncan found the back of the net, with two assists from Morgan Benneweis and one each by Noah Kuno, Chase Meurs and Trent Buchanan.

Mount Forest wound up the scoring with the only goal of the third period.

Flyers' head coach Chris Corbett says his team is resilient, and keeps an even temperament when events go against them.

Corbett tells us Flyers' management will have a difficult decision to make concerning goaltending this weekend.

Rookie Kevin Linker made 47 saves to preserve the victory Saturday, and is up against veteran Brandon Bean and fellow rookie Keegan Bradley -- one of the three likely will be cut.

The Flyers host Kincardine at MRC Friday at 8pm, while Mount Forest travels to Orillia for an inter-division contest with the PJHL's Carruthers Division next Saturday.

The win gives Goderich sole possession of sixth place in the Pollock Division with a 3-and-6 record and six points -- two more than idle Hanover.

The Patriots meanwhile fall out of first place as Walkerton edged Wingham 3-2, to move one point ahead of Mount Forest -- Braden Boley scored the game-winner for the Hawks.

Kincardine stays in fifth place, as Mike Feighen led the Bulldogs with two goals in a 5-2 win over Penetang in inter-division action Saturday.

In the PJHL Yeck Division Saturday, Jon Baker's two goal performance helped Exeter to a 3-2 victory over Aylmer, with Jordan McCarter's short-handed marker standing up as the game-winner.
